The origins of Origin, Circle of Fire and pancake day!

Elemental Origin by Alexandra May
So, it’s Pancake day!! A very special day that always goes down on my calendar as one of my favourite days of the year…or not! Pancake day is actually a day where me and my husband SUDDENLY realise (usually from another friend’s post) that it is indeed Shrove Tuesday…and we have nothing in the cupboard closely resembling pancake ingredients. Cue mad dash to any close shop that has eggs, milk, butter (we forgot the butter this time!). And then we make pancakes.

But this year it has come to my attention that making pancakes and enjoying them together is a very anti-social activity. Firstly, someone has to stand and make them. And you don’t make one, you make five or ten (small pan, people). Then, because we’re not sophisticated enough to remember to put the oven on, or heat up the plate warmer, you have to eat them while they’re actually hot. So, what normally happens is one person cooks, one person eats. Then we swap, the other person cooks while the other person eats. Usually on the kitchen side amongst the few ingredients we could find. Then you get to that awful moment when you just can’t stand to look at another pancake again!!! Please, no more!!! So, anyway. I love pancakes, and I know there’s a reason why we have a Shrove Tuesday, but lets be honest. I am not going to fast for the next 40 days.

Anyway!! The reason for this post wasn’t to carry on about that. The reason was to let you know a bit more about Origin. I know lots of you are still waiting for Elemental: Circle of Fire. But Origin is important, and I know it will help you when CoF comes out. You see, Circle of Fire starts at an odd place. Not what you were thinking i.e. Rose running back down the tunnel to heal Aiden etc. It starts in a hospital, with Rose having a funny moment (not funny ha-ha). I also realised when writing CoF that I have so many characters that each need a small voice to show you who they are and why they’re important. So Origin is a series of events that leads up to the end cliffhanger of Elemental: The First told from other characters POV’s. You remember all the cloaked dudes in the Prologue? Well, they were important. As are Aiden’s group of guys that he hangs around with. In fact all the characters have their own place in the story. And Origin will link up nicely with Circle of Fire so you’ll all be up to speed with what’s going on when Rose wakes up in the hospital at the beginning of Circle of Fire. (*gasps, deep breath*).

Now that we’ve got that cleared up (!) I’m excitedly ecstatic to tell you that The Battle for Arcanon Major (The Lost Dacomé Files #1) is now available for Amazon.com and .co.uk. Click on this Buy Online link and it’ll take you straight there!

So, to end this rambling post I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who sent me emails and messages when The Battle was released. I loved writing the book so it overwhelms me to know you enjoyed it to.
That’s it. As they say in this neck of the woods, Ciao for now!

Alex x

PS. I’m adding this a full 40 minutes after the post has gone live but I thought I would add it because I know some of you will ask. You’re going to ask if Aiden’s POV will feature in Origin. And my answer is…yes. Just so you know!

All aboard the bus from Warminster to ‘nowhere’ land – Imber

Vintage Routemaster buses ferried visitors across Salisbury Plain to the abandoned village of Imber on Saturday for the third year running.

The five red London buses ran an hourly bus service from Warminster, through Imber, which has been opened by the MOD for eight days, and out to villages as far afield as West Lavington.

Many people attended the annual St Giles Day service at St Giles Church, held at 3pm, though others just came along for the ride.

Service organiser Michael Meilton said: “The whole thing started with four of us, bus industry professionals, deciding what we could do for fun when the Warminster vintage bus run was cancelled back in 2009.

“We called a few contacts and got it all up and running. It has turned out to be very popular.

“This year we had transport enthusiasts from as far away as Hull, and a couple from Swansea celebrating their wedding anniversary.

“Someone pointed out how surreal it is seeing five red buses driving along through the plain, which is so desolate. It is like something from Dr Who.”

Mr Meilton, 56, of Evans Close, Chippenham, said any excess money from ticket sales would again be donated to charity, this year the Royal British Legion.

Buses were kindly donated by the Bath Bus Company, First Buses in London and Stagecoach West in Gloucester.

Among Imber’s visitors on Saturday was family history hunter Wendy Wilshin, 68, of Great Cheverill, who has traced her family in the village back to an Isaac Carter the early 19th century.

“I know that my grandfather left the village to work for the railway, so my immediate family had left when the village was taken over by the military,” she said.

“But they lived there for a long time before that, and as it has been cut off so dramatically, it is a good place to research family history, everything is frozen.

“My family always visit the village whenever it is open. There are lots of people around here with Imber connections and it is a great place for us all to meet up.”

She met up with fellow amateur historian David Webb, from Hampshire, who has traced the Imber Carters back to the late 17th century.

“It was the first time David has been to Imber, so I went to meet him there,” she said.

“Our ancestors were agricultural workers and didn’t move around very much, but I’ve learned they were Baptists so they aren’t in the parish records.

“I will have a look in the records in Chippenham.”

The Imber bus rides this year have raised more than £1,000 for the Royal British Legion.

A touching story from Wiltshire

(For those of you who don’t know it, Wootton Bassett is a small town in Wiltshire that receives the British fallen soldiers).

BBC News
Four years ago repatriation flights started flying into RAF Lynham in Wiltshire and to pay tribute, the people of Wootton Bassett lined the streets and fell silent as hearses passed through the town.

Over the years this mark of respect has been repeated, to honour those fallen and to show support for their families.

New Projects

I’m currently working on a small sideline project called ‘The Lost Dacomé Files’ which will tell the back story of the grey lady herself. I felt this had to be written separately from the main series. Mixing two worlds and two lead characters would not only compromise the continuity but also leave the reader thoroughly confused! This spin-off should be read After Elemental: The First but Before the second book. There will also be more back stories along the way.

Book 2 was primarily called Elemental: The Fire Within. The book is already almost half written. Unfortunately we’re going to be renaming it as the name is too close to another already published.
